What is the difference between a Personal Trainer and Exercise Physiologist?

Training is the simplest fact. Exercise Physiologists undertake tertiary education for at least 4 years, a Personal Trainer can be qualified with as little as 8 weeks of training. Exercise Physiologists are recognised with most private health funds , Medicare, WorkCover and TAC – thus rebates for sessions are available. This is not the case for Personal Trainers.

Exercise Physiologists have an advanced level of knowledge on anatomy, injury rehabilitation, treating long term health conditions and also in preventing injuries. A Personal Trainer is only able to train healthy people and are not insured to see anyone else as their training does not cover it extensively enough.

So if you are looking to get fit, prevent injuries, recover from injuries or even improve your own health conditions, then an Exercise Physiologist is for you.

What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist?

A Physio trains for the same length of time as an Exercise Physiologist, however they treat in different ways.

Physio’s treat with more of a dedication to massage and manipulation therapy. They focus on diagnosing and treating the acute or longer term pain or muscular injuries and the focus is for hands on manipulation to help reduce pain and inflammation.

An Exercise Physiologist provides no hands on manipulation therapy. They treat with clinical exercise prescription and our experienced Exercise Physiologists work very well in conjunction with physios. Their focus is on prescribing exercises for not simply the healthy population, but also those with injuries and long term health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and many more.

So if you have just got injured, then seeing a physio or doctor would be the first port of call. However once diagnosed and you are looking to recover, an Exercise Physiologist usually takes over to help recover and prevent injury redeveloping. If you simply want to get fit and active, then an Exercise Physiologist is the suitable choice.
